Rising Ocean Freight Rates: What’s Causing Them and How to Prepare

Over the past few months, the ocean freight world has been anything but calm. Container shipping rates are climbing to levels we haven’t seen since the major logistics crises of recent years. So, what’s going on? Why the sudden spike? And more importantly, how can you prepare your business to stay competitive?

Let’s break it down clearly and directly.

Why Are Costs Going Up So Fast?

1️⃣ Shifting Trade Dynamics

The ongoing U.S.–China trade war has fueled market uncertainty, followed by spikes in demand after temporary tariff pauses.

2️⃣ Rerouting Due to Geopolitical Conflicts

Geopolitical issues like the war in Ukraine and rising tensions in the Red Sea and Strait of Hormuz have forced many carriers to take longer routes, like sailing around Africa. That adds anywhere from 10 to 14 days per trip, driving up fuel and operating costs significantly.

2️⃣ Container Shortages and Port Congestion
With vessels taking longer detours and delays stacking up, containers are taking more time to return to origin ports. This creates a domino effect: global availability shrinks, and prices rise due to reduced supply. Fewer containers in rotation = higher usage costs.

3️⃣ Higher Insurance and Surcharges
High-risk areas are now seeing insurance premiums jump by as much as 50%. On top of that, additional charges for congestion and security are being added—directly increasing your final freight rate.

4️⃣ Climate Disruptions and Green Regulations
Heatwaves across Europe are affecting key inland routes like the Rhine River, and droughts continue to restrict Panama Canal traffic. On top of that, new environmental regulations require cleaner fuels and greener technology, both of which cost more.

How Does This Affect Your Business?

Your logistics costs may spike suddenly, eating into margins.

Unplanned delays in delivery could lead to stockouts and unhappy customers.

Space and container availability are tighter than ever, potentially slowing down your operations.

You may be forced to raise prices, putting your competitiveness at risk.

Bottom line? Poor planning could cost you customers and business opportunities.

Strategies to Minimize the Impact of Soaring Ocean Freight Rates

1. Diversify Routes and Transportation Modes

Nearshoring: Bring suppliers closer to reduce reliance on ocean freight.

Intermodal transport: Mix ocean, rail, and trucking to cut overall costs.

2. Lock in Long-Term Agreements with Carriers

Volume contracts (Name Account Rates: Secure preferential rates in exchange for committed volumes.

Freight forwarder partnerships: Access better deals through shipment consolidation.

3. Optimize Inventory and Purchasing

Smarter demand forecasting:: Avoid panic buying that clogs your supply chain.

Strategic safety stock: Maintain reserves without overspending.

4. Leverage Technology for Efficiency

Real-time tracking platforms: Keep an eye on container movements to prevent delays.

Logistics optimization tools: Use AI to pick the most cost-effective carriers and routes.

5. Explore Regional Trade Alternatives

Buy closer to home: Sourcing from Latin America or Eastern Europe can cut distance and risk.

Use trade agreements: Reduce exposure to extra tariffs through smart sourcing.

Conclusion: Adaptability Is Key

The spike in ocean freight rates isn’t just a temporary, it reflects a new global logistics reality. It’s driven by a mix of complex global forces that are here to stay and will continue to impact supply chains.

Now more than ever, partnering with a knowledgeable freight forwarder—one that truly understands the market and acts as your strategic ally—can make all the difference between getting your cargo delivered on time or being left stuck at the dock.

customs Compliance: A Practical Guide to Staying on Track Without Disruptions

For many businesses, staying compliant with customs regulations can seem like a daunting task, especially when navigating different legal frameworks, technical procedures, and documentation requirements. But the good news is: it doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right preparation and a strategic approach, you can avoid delays, fines, and disruptions in your international trade operations.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the key points to ensure your customs processes run smoothly, positioning your company as a responsible and professional partner in the eyes of both authorities and logistics stakeholders.

Why Customs Compliance Matters More Than Ever?

Customs is one of the most critical control points in the supply chain. A single misstep at this stage can result in added costs, reputational damage—or even the seizure of your goods. Proper customs compliance not only ensures the legal flow of your shipments but also strengthens your business relationships with suppliers, customers, and regulatory agencies.

When you operate with knowledge and foresight, you lay the foundation for a scalable, sustainable international trade operation.

Step-by-Step: How to Stay Compliant Without the Headaches

Here’s a practical roadmap to help you meet customs requirements with confidence and efficiency:

1. Accurate Tariff Classification

Everything starts with assigning the correct system code to your goods. This classification determines applicable duties, restrictions, and required documentation. Mistakes here can lead to overpaying taxes, or worse, penalties. If in doubt, consult a licensed customs broker or a trade compliance expert.

2. Verify Product- and Country-Specific Regulations

Each country has its own rules, especially depending on the type of product you’re shipping. Some goods require health permits, phytosanitary certificates, certificates of origin, or compliance with technical standards. Before importing or exporting, research the regulatory requirements both at origin and destination. Proactive planning helps avoid customs holds.

3. Ensure Complete and Accurate Documentation

One of the most common causes of delays is missing or incorrect paperwork. Make sure you have:

A complete commercial invoice with full buyer/seller information and detailed product descriptions

A packing list

A Bill of Lading (or Air Waybill for air shipments)

Relevant certificates (origin, quality, sanitary, etc.)

Import/export licenses or permits, if required

Documentation needed for any preferential trade agreements or duty exemptions

4. Work with a Trusted Customs Broker

A reliable customs broker is more than a document processor—they’re a strategic advisor. They keep you informed of regulatory changes, help identify cost-saving opportunities, and manage compliance risks. Evaluate their track record, responsiveness, and regulatory expertise.

5. Establish Internal Compliance Procedures

Customs compliance requires internal discipline. Set up a clear process for document management, HS code validation, and requirement verification. Train your team regularly and keep organized records of every transaction.

6. Monitor Regulatory Changes

Customs regulations are dynamic. Tax reforms, trade agreements, tariff revisions, and technical requirements can shift frequently. Subscribe to official bulletins, follow trade organizations, or partner with a compliance consultant to stay current.

7. Avoid Risky Shortcuts or Misdeclarations

Underreporting declared values or using incorrect codes might seem like short-term wins—but they carry serious legal risks. Customs audits can lead to fines, suspension from the importer registry, or even criminal charges. Full compliance is always the smartest long-term strategy.

The Benefits of Strong Customs Compliance

When you make customs compliance a core part of your logistics strategy, the rewards are clear:

Faster customs clearance times

Smoother inspections and fewer storage and demurrage fees

Optimized duty costs through trade agreements and exemptions

A stronger reputation with global clients and partners

Better planning and control over your supply chain

Final Thoughts

Customs compliance isn’t just a legal requirement, it’s a competitive advantage. By embracing a culture of compliance, your business gains efficiency, builds trust, and strengthens its international reputation. It’s not about making things complicated, it’s about being prepared with the right strategy, the right partners, and clear processes.

This guide is designed to help you take the right steps with confidence. As international logistics experts, we’re here to support you at every stage—and help turn compliance into a strength that drives your business forward.

How to Choose the Best Freight Forwarder to Optimize Costs and Timelines

In today’s globalized and highly competitive market, knowing how to choose the best freight forwarder has become a strategic decision for businesses aiming to optimize their logistics processes. It’s not just about cutting costs—it’s about ensuring efficiency, compliance, and risk management across the entire supply chain.

Why It’s Critical to Know How to Choose the Best Freight Forwarder

A freight forwarder is much more than just an intermediary. They’re a strategic partner who can help you boost competitiveness—or, if poorly chosen, put your entire operation at risk. Picking the right one means having someone by your side who understands your needs, manages timelines precisely, provides full visibility, and anticipates any potential logistics snags.

If you’ve ever dealt with unexplained delays, hidden costs, or poorly handled logistics paperwork, you already know how important it is to make this choice with a solid foundation. Knowing how to choose the best freight forwarder goes beyond simply comparing prices—it’s about assessing the reliability and responsiveness of the provider.

Key Criteria for Choosing the Best Freight Forwarder

Here are some essential factors to consider when selecting the best freight forwarder for your business:

1. Proven experience with your cargo type and routes

Not all forwarders handle every product or market with the same efficiency. Make sure the forwarder has experience with your type of cargo—whether it’s general goods, hazardous materials, perishables, oversized items, etc.—and with the origin and destination countries you work with. A track record in similar situations is a key indicator of reliability.

2. Global network and local coverage

A great freight forwarder has a robust network of strategic partners, including carriers, logistics operators, customs brokers, and warehouses in key locations. This network is crucial for resolving contingencies quickly, offering competitive rates, and maintaining control at every step.

3. Transparency and continuous communication

Part of knowing how to choose the best freight forwarder involves evaluating their communication style. Do they provide proactive updates? Are they clear and frequent with their information? Do they respond promptly to questions and unexpected issues? Transparency and open communication are essential for building trust.

4. Risk management capability

Great logistics isn’t just about speed—it’s about resilience. The best freight forwarder doesn’t just plan; they foresee and respond. Ask if they have protocols for events like port delays, customs inspections, strikes, or route closures. Their ability to act during crises can save you major losses.

5. Use of technology and traceability

Today, technology makes all the difference. Tracking platforms, automated alerts, digital documentation, and performance analysis are key tools. Check whether the forwarder offers real-time visibility and digital solutions that make your operations easier.

6. Reputation and references

Look into what other clients have to say. References, success stories, and testimonials are strong indicators of how a freight forwarder truly operates. You can also verify whether they’re members of recognized logistics associations or hold quality certifications.

Beyond Cost: Building a Relationship Based on Trust

When you understand how to choose the best freight forwarder, you also realize this decision shouldn’t be based solely on the lowest price. Cheap solutions can end up costing you much more if the service doesn’t deliver. Focus on building a long-term relationship based on trust, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

A good forwarder listens to your needs, tailors solutions to your processes, and grows with you. In fact, many successful companies see their freight forwarder not as an external vendor, but as an extension of their logistics team.

Final Thoughts

Knowing how to choose the best freight forwarder is a strategic skill for any business that wants to operate efficiently, securely, and profitably. By weighing factors like experience, network strength, communication, technology, and reputation, you can make more informed and confident decisions.

Remember: the best choice isn’t just about cost—it’s about trust. And that trust is built on data, results, and a shared vision of logistics success.

Tariff Policies and the Supply Chain: Repercussions and Strategies for 2025 Tariff policies and the global supply chain are more […]

Tariff Policies and the Supply Chain: Repercussions and Strategies for 2025

Tariff policies and the global supply chain are more intertwined today than ever before. Government decisions on international trade taxes don’t just affect exporters and importers—they create ripple effects across every link of the global logistics network. Costs, timelines, routes, and trade relationships can shift dramatically when protectionist measures are introduced.

In 2025, this issue has surged back into the global spotlight following recent moves by president Donald Trump. In April, Trump announced a blanket 10% tariff on imports—excluding Mexico and Canada—along with an additional 34% on Chinese goods and 20% on imports from the European Union. He also threatened to impose a 100% tariff on cars made in Mexico—a move that would severely disrupt the country’s manufacturing and automotive industries.

This geo-economic shakeup is a clear warning to businesses: tariff policies and the supply chain must be analyzed together—and strategically.

How Do Tariff Policies Impact the Supply Chain?

Rising logistics costs: Higher tariffs drive up the price of imported goods and raw materials. That can squeeze profit margins or force companies to pass the increase onto consumers, weakening competitiveness.

Delays and bureaucracy: Frequent changes in tariff classifications, tighter customs controls, or new rules of origin can slow down logistical processes and cause bottlenecks.

Reshuffling suppliers and routes: Companies may need to rethink sourcing strategies, seeking partners in countries with more favorable trade agreements or less exposure to restrictive policies.

Trade instability: Trade wars and unilateral measures increase uncertainty for companies that rely on international commerce as a key growth driver.

How Can Companies Prepare?

To navigate the challenges posed by tariff policies and protect their supply chains, companies should consider these key strategies:

Diversify sourcing: Avoid relying on a single country. If that partner faces sanctions, your operations could be at risk.

Optimize customs compliance: Leverage customs experts or software to properly classify goods and take advantage of any tariff benefits available.

Stay on top of regulatory changes: Being informed about new policies enables proactive, rather than reactive, decision-making.

Invest in logistics technology: Tools for traceability, market intelligence, and automation allow companies to respond swiftly to disruptions.

Work with reliable freight forwarders: A good freight forwarder does more than move goods—they’re strategic partners who help foresee and manage logistical and tariff-related risks.

What Does This Mean for Mexico?

As one of the U.S.’s key trading partners, Mexico must tread carefully. While initially exempted from the general 10% tariff, the looming threat of steep tariffs on its automotive exports is cause for concern. Mexican businesses must bolster their resilience, adapt their supply chains, and explore nearshoring opportunities to reduce exposure to direct sanctions.

Additionally, the ongoing uncertainty surrounding tariff policies and supply chain rules could affect regional agreements like the USMCA. It’s vital that companies fully understand rules of origin, dispute resolution mechanisms, and protective tools available under the agreement.

Final Thoughts

Tariff policies and the supply chain are more connected than ever. In 2025, businesses that want to remain globally competitive must adopt a holistic, proactive, and flexible approach. This means not just adapting to change, but anticipating it, optimizing operations, and forming strategic partnerships with logistics experts and trade advisors.

Is your company ready for the next wave of tariffs? Now is the time to evaluate your supply chain and make informed decisions—before trade policy sets the pace for your business.

March 8 is not just a day to celebrate women’s achievements but also a time to reflect on the challenges […]

March 8 is not just a day to celebrate women’s achievements but also a time to reflect on the challenges that still lie ahead. This year, the message is clear: “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.”

Last year, we highlighted various programs and initiatives designed to support female entrepreneurs and business owners, aiming to bridge the gender gap and boost women’s participation in international trade. However, the challenge remains significant. This year, we want to focus on what we can do within our own sphere to create a more equitable and inclusive industry.

We know that the logistics and international trade sectors have traditionally been male-dominated. While more women are entering the field, their representation remains low, especially in executive and leadership roles. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), women make up approximately 24% of the global workforce in logistics. However, recent studies show that female representation in supply chain management has stagnated—or even declined in some cases. For instance, in Germany, only a small fraction (8.6%) of leadership positions in logistics are held by women.

That’s why, as a company and as individuals, we can take concrete steps to promote inclusion and support the professional growth of women in our industry:

Cultivate an inclusive workplace culture – Create an environment where equal opportunities aren’t just an ideal but a reality.

Highlight female leaders – Recognize and amplify the achievements of women in logistics to inspire future generations.

Implement equitable policies – Ensure equal pay, promote workplace flexibility, and establish mentorship programs.

Support women’s training and leadership development – Provide opportunities for career advancement so more women can step into strategic roles.

Increase female participation in technical and operational roles – Encourage and support women’s entry into key positions within the supply chain.

Gender diversity isn’t just about equality—it’s also a powerful driver of innovation and growth. Companies with diverse teams achieve better outcomes, make more informed decisions, and create a lasting positive impact on society

Today marks a significant day as we come together globally to champion the importance of eradicating all forms of discrimination, especially those based on skin color, ethnicity, nationality, or any other race-related factor. Join us as we delve into the profound significance of inclusion and diversity while exploring actionable steps to eliminate racial discrimination in all its guises.

Understanding the issue

Racial discrimination is a complex issue that impacts millions worldwide, manifesting in hurtful comments, violent acts, and systematic exclusions. It’s crucial to recognize that a person’s race does not define their worth or potential. Every individual deserves respect and dignity, irrespective of their ethnic or cultural background.

The Ripple Effect: Impact of Discrimination

Beyond affecting individuals directly, racial discrimination casts a dark shadow over entire societies. It fuels division, fosters damaging stereotypes, and stifles the growth and progress of communities. It’s time to break this harmful cycle and collaboratively forge a world that celebrates inclusivity and fairness.

Championing Diversity and Tolerance

The key to dismantling racial discrimination lies in promoting diversity and fostering tolerance across all facets of life. Embracing our differences not only enriches our collective tapestry but also fosters mutual learning and growth. Educating future generations on the value of inclusion and diversity is foundational to creating a just and equitable society.

Concrete Steps to Fight Racial Discrimination

To pave the way for a world free of racial discrimination, we must commit to tangible actions, including:

1. Education and Awareness: Supporting educational initiatives that promote respect, empathy, and cultural understanding among diverse communities.

2. Advocating Inclusive Policies: Backing policies and laws that safeguard the rights of every individual and foster equal opportunities regardless of race.

3. Active Engagement: Participating in community-driven efforts that champion inclusion and diversity across all spheres of life.

4. Addressing Systemic Racism: Tackling and dismantling institutional and social structures that perpetuate racial biases and inequalities.

A Future Rooted in Equality and Unity

As we observe the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, we at Kaizen do Mexico reaffirm our dedication to crafting a world where individuals are valued for their character, not their race. Together, let’s pave a path towards a present and future brimming with equality and diversity, where each person can flourish without the fear of prejudice.

Let’s celebrate the richness of diversity and champion equality in every stride we take!

On International Women’s Day, let’s take a closer look at the strides made in the field of international trade in Mexico, and we found that women entrepreneurs and business leaders keen on venturing into global trade or foreign commerce are met with an array of specific support measures.

Some of these measures include:

Training and Advisory Programs: There are governmental and non-governmental organization programs that offer training and advice in international trade for women entrepreneurs and businesswomen. These programs may include workshops, seminars, online courses, and mentoring sessions designed to help women understand key aspects of international trade and develop skills to expand their businesses in the global market.

Financial Assistance and Grants: Some financial institutions and government agencies offer specific financing and grants for women entrepreneurs aiming to dive into international trade. These funds can be used to cover costs associated with participating in international trade fairs, adapting products for foreign markets, training in international trade, and other expenses related to international business expansion.

Support Platforms and Business Networks: There are support networks and business platforms dedicated exclusively to women entrepreneurs and businesswomen in Mexico. These networks can provide networking opportunities, access to resources and business tools, as well as a space to share experiences and best practices with other women in the business world.

Advocating for Inclusive Trade Policies: Efforts are being made to promote more inclusive trade policies that recognize and address the specific needs of women entrepreneurs in Mexico. This may include policies to reduce trade barriers, promote gender equality in international supply chains, and facilitate women’s access to fair trade opportunities.

Embarking on Trade Missions and Showcasing at International Fairs: Women entrepreneurs in Mexico can benefit from participating in trade missions and international fairs organized by the government or private institutions. These missions provide a platform to establish business contacts, explore market opportunities, and promote Mexican products and services abroad.

These are some of the support measures available today for women entrepreneurs in Mexico who wish to participate in international trade or foreign commerce. It is important for interested women to research and take advantage of these resources to maximize their chances of success in the global market.

Now, let’s shine a spotlight on two specific initiatives:

MujerExportaMX is an initiative of InMujeres and the Ministries of Economy, Welfare, Finance, and Culture. Last year marked its fourth edition, continuing to include women entrepreneurs for the exportation of their products. This edition developed various activities promoting the democratization of foreign trade.

MujerES Bancomext is spearheaded by Bancomext and the Ministry of Finance seeking to increase the participation of women entrepreneurs in foreign trade and strategic sectors to strengthen their position in global markets. It connects SMEs, owned or operated by women, with banking and non-banking financial intermediaries.

On the occasion of Zero Discrimination Day, it’s important to shed light on the underlying meaning of a commonly used saying in our country, which reflects that entrenched issues of discrimination and prejudice persist in today’s society, affecting how individuals are treated in various contexts. The popular saying “how you are seen determines how you are treated” encapsulates this reality, where superficial perceptions based on appearance, race, gender, or other factors often dictate the treatment we receive. In this article, we will delve into the notion of “second-class citizens” and how discrimination affects those who are seen and treated as such in society.

The Impact of Superficial Perceptions

It’s undeniable that superficial perceptions play a significant role in how people are treated. From the first encounter, initial impressions can influence subsequent interactions. Unfortunately, these perceptions often stem from deep-seated stereotypes and prejudices, leading to unfair and inequitable treatment.

Discrimination in Action

The reality of being considered a “second-class citizen” manifests in various ways in society. From unequal access to job and educational opportunities to discrimination in the justice system and healthcare, those perceived as different or “less than” often face significant hurdles in their daily lives.

According to a study from Cornell University, individuals with morbid obesity face up to a 24% wage discrimination and are 43% less likely to be hired compared to individuals of average weight for a similar position.

As stated by Harvard University, approximately 30% of individuals with atypical physical appearance report encountering barriers in accessing healthcare services, including denial of medical treatment or lack of proper care due to discrimination.

The Cycle of Discrimination

What’s concerning is that the perception of being a “second-class citizen” can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. People who are consistently marginalized and treated unfairly may begin to internalize these perceptions, affecting their self-esteem and sense of personal worth. This, in turn, can perpetuate the cycle of discrimination and inequality.

Breaking Down Barriers and Promoting Equality

Addressing the issue of “second-class citizens” requires a collective and ongoing effort to challenge the stereotypes and prejudices entrenched in society. This involves promoting education about diversity, fostering empathy and understanding among different groups, and advocating for inclusive policies and practices in all aspects of life.

Conclusion

Ultimately, the saying “how you are seen determines how you are treated” reminds us of the importance of looking beyond superficial appearances and treating others with dignity, respect, and compassion. By challenging discriminatory perceptions and advocating for equal treatment for all citizens. At Kaizen Do Mexico, we believe that by striving to work together, we can build a fairer and more inclusive society today and for future generations.

In Mexico’s dynamic economic landscape, international trade plays a pivotal role, with approximately 63% of the country’s GDP closely tied […]

In Mexico’s dynamic economic landscape, international trade plays a pivotal role, with approximately 63% of the country’s GDP closely tied to this vital activity. This phenomenon not only reflects the growing globalization of the Mexican economy but also its promising future as one of the most internationalized economies in the world.

But what truly drives this economic interconnection? The answer lies in a fundamental component: Logistics. But what exactly is Logistics? According to the Council of Logistic Management, it is the process of planning, implementing, and efficiently and cost-effectively controlling the flow and storage of raw materials, work-in-progress inventory, and finished goods, as well as associated information flow, from the point of origin to the point of consumption, all with the aim of meeting customer needs and demands.

International trade, an ancient activity involving the exchange of goods and services between producers and consumers, has evolved significantly in the modern era. It is not limited to the mere physical exchange of goods but also encompasses services, capital flows, cross-border movements of business people, and even technological transactions. In fact, in many cases, these latter transactions are more significant than tangible goods transactions, representing about 70% of trade in developed countries. This paradigm shift is largely attributed to the rapid advancement of communication, information technology, and changing demands in commercial logistics and the supply chain.

Customs clearance, an essential component of the foreign trade process, involves a series of procedures and formalities related to the entry and exit of goods from the national territory. These procedures, carried out before customs authorities and regulated by the Tax Administration Service, require efficient management and, in many cases, the use of the electronic customs system to streamline the flow of goods in an increasingly dynamic and competitive environment.

In conclusion, optimizing the supply chain stands as the cornerstone of success in Mexico’s international trade. From efficient logistics management to the proper execution of customs procedures, each step in this process plays a vital role in promoting economic growth and prosperity for the country on the global stage.
