Rising Ocean Freight Rates: What’s Causing Them and How to Prepare

Over the past few months, the ocean freight world has been anything but calm. Container shipping rates are climbing to levels we haven’t seen since the major logistics crises of recent years. So, what’s going on? Why the sudden spike? And more importantly, how can you prepare your business to stay competitive?

Let’s break it down clearly and directly.

Why Are Costs Going Up So Fast?

1️⃣ Shifting Trade Dynamics

The ongoing U.S.–China trade war has fueled market uncertainty, followed by spikes in demand after temporary tariff pauses.

2️⃣ Rerouting Due to Geopolitical Conflicts

Geopolitical issues like the war in Ukraine and rising tensions in the Red Sea and Strait of Hormuz have forced many carriers to take longer routes, like sailing around Africa. That adds anywhere from 10 to 14 days per trip, driving up fuel and operating costs significantly.

2️⃣ Container Shortages and Port Congestion
With vessels taking longer detours and delays stacking up, containers are taking more time to return to origin ports. This creates a domino effect: global availability shrinks, and prices rise due to reduced supply. Fewer containers in rotation = higher usage costs.

3️⃣ Higher Insurance and Surcharges
High-risk areas are now seeing insurance premiums jump by as much as 50%. On top of that, additional charges for congestion and security are being added—directly increasing your final freight rate.

4️⃣ Climate Disruptions and Green Regulations
Heatwaves across Europe are affecting key inland routes like the Rhine River, and droughts continue to restrict Panama Canal traffic. On top of that, new environmental regulations require cleaner fuels and greener technology, both of which cost more.

How Does This Affect Your Business?

Your logistics costs may spike suddenly, eating into margins.

Unplanned delays in delivery could lead to stockouts and unhappy customers.

Space and container availability are tighter than ever, potentially slowing down your operations.

You may be forced to raise prices, putting your competitiveness at risk.

Bottom line? Poor planning could cost you customers and business opportunities.

Strategies to Minimize the Impact of Soaring Ocean Freight Rates

1. Diversify Routes and Transportation Modes

Nearshoring: Bring suppliers closer to reduce reliance on ocean freight.

Intermodal transport: Mix ocean, rail, and trucking to cut overall costs.

2. Lock in Long-Term Agreements with Carriers

Volume contracts (Name Account Rates: Secure preferential rates in exchange for committed volumes.

Freight forwarder partnerships: Access better deals through shipment consolidation.

3. Optimize Inventory and Purchasing

Smarter demand forecasting:: Avoid panic buying that clogs your supply chain.

Strategic safety stock: Maintain reserves without overspending.

4. Leverage Technology for Efficiency

Real-time tracking platforms: Keep an eye on container movements to prevent delays.

Logistics optimization tools: Use AI to pick the most cost-effective carriers and routes.

5. Explore Regional Trade Alternatives

Buy closer to home: Sourcing from Latin America or Eastern Europe can cut distance and risk.

Use trade agreements: Reduce exposure to extra tariffs through smart sourcing.

Conclusion: Adaptability Is Key

The spike in ocean freight rates isn’t just a temporary, it reflects a new global logistics reality. It’s driven by a mix of complex global forces that are here to stay and will continue to impact supply chains.

Now more than ever, partnering with a knowledgeable freight forwarder—one that truly understands the market and acts as your strategic ally—can make all the difference between getting your cargo delivered on time or being left stuck at the dock.

customs Compliance: A Practical Guide to Staying on Track Without Disruptions

For many businesses, staying compliant with customs regulations can seem like a daunting task, especially when navigating different legal frameworks, technical procedures, and documentation requirements. But the good news is: it doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right preparation and a strategic approach, you can avoid delays, fines, and disruptions in your international trade operations.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the key points to ensure your customs processes run smoothly, positioning your company as a responsible and professional partner in the eyes of both authorities and logistics stakeholders.

Why Customs Compliance Matters More Than Ever?

Customs is one of the most critical control points in the supply chain. A single misstep at this stage can result in added costs, reputational damage—or even the seizure of your goods. Proper customs compliance not only ensures the legal flow of your shipments but also strengthens your business relationships with suppliers, customers, and regulatory agencies.

When you operate with knowledge and foresight, you lay the foundation for a scalable, sustainable international trade operation.

Step-by-Step: How to Stay Compliant Without the Headaches

Here’s a practical roadmap to help you meet customs requirements with confidence and efficiency:

1. Accurate Tariff Classification

Everything starts with assigning the correct system code to your goods. This classification determines applicable duties, restrictions, and required documentation. Mistakes here can lead to overpaying taxes, or worse, penalties. If in doubt, consult a licensed customs broker or a trade compliance expert.

2. Verify Product- and Country-Specific Regulations

Each country has its own rules, especially depending on the type of product you’re shipping. Some goods require health permits, phytosanitary certificates, certificates of origin, or compliance with technical standards. Before importing or exporting, research the regulatory requirements both at origin and destination. Proactive planning helps avoid customs holds.

3. Ensure Complete and Accurate Documentation

One of the most common causes of delays is missing or incorrect paperwork. Make sure you have:

A complete commercial invoice with full buyer/seller information and detailed product descriptions

A packing list

A Bill of Lading (or Air Waybill for air shipments)

Relevant certificates (origin, quality, sanitary, etc.)

Import/export licenses or permits, if required

Documentation needed for any preferential trade agreements or duty exemptions

4. Work with a Trusted Customs Broker

A reliable customs broker is more than a document processor—they’re a strategic advisor. They keep you informed of regulatory changes, help identify cost-saving opportunities, and manage compliance risks. Evaluate their track record, responsiveness, and regulatory expertise.

5. Establish Internal Compliance Procedures

Customs compliance requires internal discipline. Set up a clear process for document management, HS code validation, and requirement verification. Train your team regularly and keep organized records of every transaction.

6. Monitor Regulatory Changes

Customs regulations are dynamic. Tax reforms, trade agreements, tariff revisions, and technical requirements can shift frequently. Subscribe to official bulletins, follow trade organizations, or partner with a compliance consultant to stay current.

7. Avoid Risky Shortcuts or Misdeclarations

Underreporting declared values or using incorrect codes might seem like short-term wins—but they carry serious legal risks. Customs audits can lead to fines, suspension from the importer registry, or even criminal charges. Full compliance is always the smartest long-term strategy.

The Benefits of Strong Customs Compliance

When you make customs compliance a core part of your logistics strategy, the rewards are clear:

Faster customs clearance times

Smoother inspections and fewer storage and demurrage fees

Optimized duty costs through trade agreements and exemptions

A stronger reputation with global clients and partners

Better planning and control over your supply chain

Final Thoughts

Customs compliance isn’t just a legal requirement, it’s a competitive advantage. By embracing a culture of compliance, your business gains efficiency, builds trust, and strengthens its international reputation. It’s not about making things complicated, it’s about being prepared with the right strategy, the right partners, and clear processes.

This guide is designed to help you take the right steps with confidence. As international logistics experts, we’re here to support you at every stage—and help turn compliance into a strength that drives your business forward.

How to Choose the Best Freight Forwarder to Optimize Costs and Timelines

In today’s globalized and highly competitive market, knowing how to choose the best freight forwarder has become a strategic decision for businesses aiming to optimize their logistics processes. It’s not just about cutting costs—it’s about ensuring efficiency, compliance, and risk management across the entire supply chain.

Why It’s Critical to Know How to Choose the Best Freight Forwarder

A freight forwarder is much more than just an intermediary. They’re a strategic partner who can help you boost competitiveness—or, if poorly chosen, put your entire operation at risk. Picking the right one means having someone by your side who understands your needs, manages timelines precisely, provides full visibility, and anticipates any potential logistics snags.

If you’ve ever dealt with unexplained delays, hidden costs, or poorly handled logistics paperwork, you already know how important it is to make this choice with a solid foundation. Knowing how to choose the best freight forwarder goes beyond simply comparing prices—it’s about assessing the reliability and responsiveness of the provider.

Key Criteria for Choosing the Best Freight Forwarder

Here are some essential factors to consider when selecting the best freight forwarder for your business:

1. Proven experience with your cargo type and routes

Not all forwarders handle every product or market with the same efficiency. Make sure the forwarder has experience with your type of cargo—whether it’s general goods, hazardous materials, perishables, oversized items, etc.—and with the origin and destination countries you work with. A track record in similar situations is a key indicator of reliability.

2. Global network and local coverage

A great freight forwarder has a robust network of strategic partners, including carriers, logistics operators, customs brokers, and warehouses in key locations. This network is crucial for resolving contingencies quickly, offering competitive rates, and maintaining control at every step.

3. Transparency and continuous communication

Part of knowing how to choose the best freight forwarder involves evaluating their communication style. Do they provide proactive updates? Are they clear and frequent with their information? Do they respond promptly to questions and unexpected issues? Transparency and open communication are essential for building trust.

4. Risk management capability

Great logistics isn’t just about speed—it’s about resilience. The best freight forwarder doesn’t just plan; they foresee and respond. Ask if they have protocols for events like port delays, customs inspections, strikes, or route closures. Their ability to act during crises can save you major losses.

5. Use of technology and traceability

Today, technology makes all the difference. Tracking platforms, automated alerts, digital documentation, and performance analysis are key tools. Check whether the forwarder offers real-time visibility and digital solutions that make your operations easier.

6. Reputation and references

Look into what other clients have to say. References, success stories, and testimonials are strong indicators of how a freight forwarder truly operates. You can also verify whether they’re members of recognized logistics associations or hold quality certifications.

Beyond Cost: Building a Relationship Based on Trust

When you understand how to choose the best freight forwarder, you also realize this decision shouldn’t be based solely on the lowest price. Cheap solutions can end up costing you much more if the service doesn’t deliver. Focus on building a long-term relationship based on trust, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

A good forwarder listens to your needs, tailors solutions to your processes, and grows with you. In fact, many successful companies see their freight forwarder not as an external vendor, but as an extension of their logistics team.

Final Thoughts

Knowing how to choose the best freight forwarder is a strategic skill for any business that wants to operate efficiently, securely, and profitably. By weighing factors like experience, network strength, communication, technology, and reputation, you can make more informed and confident decisions.

Remember: the best choice isn’t just about cost—it’s about trust. And that trust is built on data, results, and a shared vision of logistics success.

In Mexico’s dynamic economic landscape, international trade plays a pivotal role, with approximately 63% of the country’s GDP closely tied […]

In Mexico’s dynamic economic landscape, international trade plays a pivotal role, with approximately 63% of the country’s GDP closely tied to this vital activity. This phenomenon not only reflects the growing globalization of the Mexican economy but also its promising future as one of the most internationalized economies in the world.

But what truly drives this economic interconnection? The answer lies in a fundamental component: Logistics. But what exactly is Logistics? According to the Council of Logistic Management, it is the process of planning, implementing, and efficiently and cost-effectively controlling the flow and storage of raw materials, work-in-progress inventory, and finished goods, as well as associated information flow, from the point of origin to the point of consumption, all with the aim of meeting customer needs and demands.

International trade, an ancient activity involving the exchange of goods and services between producers and consumers, has evolved significantly in the modern era. It is not limited to the mere physical exchange of goods but also encompasses services, capital flows, cross-border movements of business people, and even technological transactions. In fact, in many cases, these latter transactions are more significant than tangible goods transactions, representing about 70% of trade in developed countries. This paradigm shift is largely attributed to the rapid advancement of communication, information technology, and changing demands in commercial logistics and the supply chain.

Customs clearance, an essential component of the foreign trade process, involves a series of procedures and formalities related to the entry and exit of goods from the national territory. These procedures, carried out before customs authorities and regulated by the Tax Administration Service, require efficient management and, in many cases, the use of the electronic customs system to streamline the flow of goods in an increasingly dynamic and competitive environment.

In conclusion, optimizing the supply chain stands as the cornerstone of success in Mexico’s international trade. From efficient logistics management to the proper execution of customs procedures, each step in this process plays a vital role in promoting economic growth and prosperity for the country on the global stage.
